College softball: UCO's Kalynn Schrock balancing softball, single motherhood

As UCO prepares to face Armstrong Atlantic in its tournament opener Thursday morning, Schrock talks about how she has managed to make all of it work.

Kalynn Schrock has pitched the Central Oklahoma softball team to the Division II Championship Finals. The leftie from Choctaw transferred from Tulsa and set a single-season record at UCO for wins with 30 and strikeouts with 272.

But her biggest accomplishment is balancing college softball and single motherhood.

She is the proud mom of Rylie Rae.

As UCO prepares to face Armstrong Atlantic in its tournament opener Thursday morning, Schrock talks about how she has managed to make all of it work.

There were a lot of factors there, the reasons why I left (Tulsa), but I definitely wanted to play. I didn't want to sit the bench, so I made my decision and called my high school coach and he told me that I'd like it here. I knew I wanted to stay close to home.

And then I found out I was pregnant.

I was about 7 1/2 months along. I had only gained about four pounds, and I never got sick. Nothing.

I played all of last year. I was pitching in regionals actually against OU, and had no idea. I was probably 7 months.

I don't know how I didn't know, but it just never clicked.

Actually, my mom had a dream, believe it or not. She had a dream and came and woke me up and she goes, “I just think we need to take a test to be safe.” And I ended up being pregnant. That was summer, around June.

I had her on Aug. 9.

The best thing that happened to me. Just a little early.
