The first official domino has fallen. Colorado is headed to the Pac-10.

The Pac-10 announced Thursday that Colorado has accepted an invitation to become the league's 11th member. CU is the Pac-10's first new member since 1978.

“This is an historic moment for the conference, as the Pac-10 is poised for tremendous growth,” Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott said. “The University of Colorado is a great fit for the conference both academically and athletically and we are incredibly excited to welcome Colorado to the Pac-10.”

It is expected Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech will also receive invitations to join the Pac-10. It is uncertain if those invitations have been received or if they will be accepted, but it has been widely reported that both will indeed happen.

“On behalf of the University of Colorado students, faculty, alumni and fans, we are proud to accept this invitation from the Pac-10 and join the most prestigious academic and athletic conference in the nation,” said CU chancellor Philip P. DiStefano.

Pac-10 and Colorado officials will hold a press conference on Friday at 12 p.m. in Boulder.

Colorado likely won't be the only Big 12 school to leave this week. It was reported Wednesday that Nebraska has also scheduled a press conference on Friday to announce that it will become a part of the Big Ten.
