A decade ago, Jackie Kashian was telling a joke that spoke to her unassailable nerd credentials. A lifelong fan of video games and an obsessive science-fiction reader, Kashian described her search for reasonable discussions with like-minded people as a journey into the “dork forest.”
That joke turned into a new level for Kashian's stand-up career, which began in the 1980s.
In 2005, Kashian started talking to comedians, musicians, comic book artists, authors and other creative people and called her podcast “The Dork Forest.” The format is simple but ingenious: The guest usually chooses one topic that he or she is fascinated by or obsessed with, and then regales Kashian with detailed information for an hour.
“I did that joke back in 2003 about how deep I have to go into the ‘dork forest' to talk to people,” said Kashian, who performs at 8 p.m. Monday at the Loony Bin.
Kashian tapped into something special, and eight years later, she has racked up hundreds of weekly episodes on the All Things Comedy network, www.allthingscomedy.com. “The Dork Forest” has made her a better comedian, she said.
“It's certainly made me more conversational,” she said.
