Community classes offered on Medicare, Social Security and more

Specialists in Medicare, Social Security and investing are coming together to offer a community class for seniors 9 a.m. to noon May 16 at Francis Tuttle, 12777 N Rockwell Ave.

“We want to give people an overview of basic knowledge, and a place to stick up their hand and say what they're not sure about,” said Linda Clure, a licensed independent insurance agent who worked several years as a Medicare specialist with the state health department.

“Lack of knowledge gets people in situations where they don't know what to do,” Clure said. For example, one woman recently chose the wrong Part D drug plan and paid $6,800 more annually than she needed, she said. Others unknowingly select Medicare supplements with premiums that increase as they age, she added.

Misconceptions about Social Security abound, said Larry Jones, who recently retired after 30 years with the agency as a claims representative and public information officer.

If recipients don't elect early withdrawal of benefits at age 62, many people mistakenly believe they have to wait a full year, Jones said. “But, Social Security benefits are available to you, every month after you turn 62,” he said. However, every month recipients put off drawing their benefits, the amount goes up a half a percentage point, he said.
