“Congress must protect those who protect us”(Point of View, March 10) contained inaccurate, inane and insulting comments. It was merely a regurgitation of the gun-grabbing, anti-Constitution progressives such as Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Charles Schumer, D-New York. Police Chiefs Bill Citty, Virgil Green and Norman McNickle mention criminals getting a “free pass” and never having to face a background check. Do they not know that criminals don't obey laws?
Citty, Green and McNickle cite the ubiquitous “2 million gun sales to criminals and other dangerous people” stopped by checks but fail to state that 94 percent were dropped due to administrative errors and less than 1 percent were even prosecuted. How many of these nefarious gangsters have they captured in the past 10 years? Vice President Joe Biden says we don't have enough time or money to go chasing after these “criminals.”
Let's look at the claim of 6.6 million in private gun sales without background checks. Eliminating family and inheritance transfers, raffle winnings and gifts, and job requirements, the remaining private sales are under 10 percent. Citty, Green and McNickle should know it's a 10-year federal felony to sell a firearm to a restricted individual. I'm also certain they're aware that there's a movement to turn the background checks into a national registry and more than a few congressmen are already calling for confiscation.
