Conservative Index rates legislators on key votes

Published: July 11, 2012

Richard Harris (Your Views, July 8) mistakenly attributed the Oklahoma Conservative Index to the Oklahoma Conservative Political Action Committee. Actually, the Oklahoma Conservative Index has been the product of the Oklahoma Constitution newspaper since its inception in 1979. Harris also implied that the Constitution's Oklahoma Conservative Index isn't objective. He apparently didn't like the fact that a lawmaker he doesn't care for got too high a score.

Actually, our Index is very objective. We don't rate legislators by whether we like them. A legislator's score is based solely on how that legislator voted on the 10 key votes that we use. Our index assigns a score based on a legislator's fidelity to the principles of limited government, individual liberty, free enterprise and constitutional government.
