Consider mentoring — contact Whiz Kids
Whiz Kids is blessed to partner with nearly 60 Oklahoma City-area churches to provide mentors for 850 at-risk elementary students, with a special focus on improving reading. Amazing things have occurred through the relationships built by Whiz Kids: better reading scores, more confidence in school, character development, even such miracles as adoptions and students being the first in their families to graduate from high school or college!

The relationship between Stephanie Coldiron, a member at Life Church in Edmond, and Cameron Wilson is typical. Last August, Stephanie was paired with Cameron, a third-grader from Thelma Parks Elementary. Cameron was not only doing poorly in school, but he frequently got into trouble. As Cameron met with Stephanie each week, his confidence grew, not just in reading, but also in standing up for what's right. Teachers began to notice him being a leader among his peers.
Recently, his school honored Cameron as “Most Improved Student.” His teacher, Tamia Taylor, says, “What mentors give these children is a gift — a gift of their time and energy and talents. So many kids like Cameron are out there ... waiting for that gift and waiting for someone to help unlock the gifts inside themselves.”
Oklahoma City School District officials estimate that 20,000 children in the district need a mentor. This is National Mentoring Month. I encourage individuals, businesses and churches to join us in this life-changing work and make a difference for more Oklahoma children.
