As a retired military and commercial pilot, I can assure you that flying in and out of an airport without an operating tower doesn't necessarily impose a higher degree of safety concerns. I'm fully capable of maintaining traffic separation from other aircraft in and around most airports. Highly congested airports such as Dallas, Atlanta, Miami and other similar airspace do need a functional tower. Also, the majority of catastrophic midair collisions have happened in FAA-controlled airspace.
