Convicted rapist given life sentence in Midwest City church murder plea deal
James Allen O'Berry, 55, of Oklahoma City, pleaded guilty Wednesday to first-degree murder in the Feb. 6, 2010, death of Nelly Pelts, 26, of Spencer. Pelts died after being stabbed and run over outside of Christ Gospel Church in Midwest City.
A convicted rapist will spend the rest of his life in prison, but avoid the death penalty after pleading guilty Wednesday to first-degree murder in the death of a woman stabbed and run over near her Midwest City church.

James Allen O'Berry, 55, of Oklahoma City, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing Nelly Pelts, 26, on Feb. 6, 2010, outside Christ Gospel Church. He gave up his right to appeal in a plea deal with prosecutors.
During his sentencing before Oklahoma County District Judge Jerry D. Bass, O'Berry thanked members of Pelts' family for their forgiveness and said he hopes she will also forgive him someday when they meet in heaven.
“I want to look her in the eye and let her know how sorry I am,” O'Berry said.
O'Berry is a registered sex offender with convictions for violent felonies in Alabama. He apologized to the family and said he wanted to die for what he had done.
“It hurt me so, bad, what happened,” he said.
Olive Pelts, the victim's mother, rose from her wheelchair to tell O'Berry she had forgiven him. Her words were barely audible.
Neil Pelts, the victim's father, also forgave him.
“I'm sure my daughter has, too,” he said.
