An Oklahoma mayor under investigation for simultaneously being paid to serve as mayor of New Cordell and general manager of that city’s utilities authority has announced he will resign both positions effective April 1.

“I have submitted my resignation from both of those positions,” Mayor Alex Damon, 54, said Wednesday.

New Cordell, commonly called Cordell, is a small Washita County city of about 3,000 residents.

Damon said he resigned because he has been offered a new position with a state agency that will involve working in “community development over a fairly large region of our state.”

Damon said agency officials have asked him not to reveal his new employer until they have the opportunity to discuss his hiring with their executive board.

Washita County District Attorney Dennis Smith requested an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation probe into Damon’s dual work arrangement after it was questioned by the state auditor in an audit released more than a year ago.

Smith could not be reached for comment Wednesday, but said previously that he had seen differing legal opinions about the propriety of Damon’s work arrangement.
