Before the Sonics can come to Oklahoma City, Mayor Mick Cornett will go to New York.

The Oklahoma City council voted Tuesday to send Cornett to New York on April 17-18 for the NBA Board of Governor's meeting.

The board, made up of a representative from each NBA ownership group, is scheduled to vote on a request by the Seattle SuperSonics to relocate to Oklahoma City.

A subcommittee representing the group visited the city March 25 and suggested the team would likely move. Cornett will not be in the meeting where NBA owners will make their decision, but city officials said Cornett wanted to be available to the media covering the event.

Oklahoma City voters approved a $121 million sales tax proposal March 4 that will pay for improvements to the Ford Center.
