ENID — The longtime home for an Enid oil family is for sale and may become a bed and breakfast and event center.
City Manager Eric Benson said Sunday he understood the Champlin mansion at S Tyler Street and W Owen K Garriott Road is a candidate for rezoning.
The home was built in 1939 by banker and oilman H.H. Champlin and still is occupied by family members, although it recently was placed for sale. It reportedly was built by
Briar Hill sandstone quarried in
Ohio and shipped to Enid. The sandstone is initially soft but becomes very hard and develops vivid colors as it weathers.
Champlin was 67 years old when the house was built and lived there five years before his death.
Brent and
Jennifer Kisling, who own Maple Place Bed and Breakfast in Enid, said they are working with some partners to buy and develop the home into a bed and breakfast. They anticipate the item will come before the
Metropolitan Area Planning Commission at the meeting Friday but do not expect the doors to open before 2010.
"We’re very excited to have the opportunity to open this unique piece of Enid history up to the community,” Kisling said. MCCLATCHY-TRIBUNE
