TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey environmentalists are hailing a federal court ruling that found fault with the way regulators handled a request to build a natural gas pipeline in New Jersey.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commissioner granted Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. permission to build a 40-mile pipeline in northwestern New Jersey as part of a network to transport natural gas being taken from the ground in Pennsylvania.

A coalition of New Jersey environmental groups sued, saying regulators should have considered the project along with three other interconnected pipelines projects approved and built within rapid succession.

In a ruling Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia agreed. The court sent the issue back to FERC to consider how to mitigate any damage done.
