Oklahoma State gets commitment from JUCO linebacker

Oklahoma State continues to fill up its 2014 recruiting class, getting a commitment from Iowa Falls (Iowa) Ellsworth Community College outside linebacker Devante Averette Monday.

Averette, who originally committed to West Virginia in August, is rated a three-star prospect by Rivals and Scout and also holds offers from Appalachian State, Florida Atlantic and North Texas. He took an official visit to OSU last week for the Kansas State game.

Averette said he chose OSU because of the style of defense, the facilities, the relationship he has established with defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer and the people he met in Stillwater.

“The people were great,” he said. “They were always nice, welcoming, heartwarming, and everything was just such a great vibe from an academic standpoint and just the people in general that were showing me around and just everybody had a nice attention to them. It was a nice atmosphere and I just remember saying something like, ‘I can get used to it real quickly.’”

Averette should have a chance to help the Cowboys right away, as starters Shaun Lewis and Caleb Lavey and key backup Joe Mitchell are all currently seniors.

The Cowboys now have 22 commitments. Averette is the fourth linebacker, joining Broken Arrow’s Gyasi Akem, Spring (Texas) Klein Oak’s Josh Mabin and Pearland (Texas) Pearland’s Justin Phillips.
