ST. LOUIS — A disappointing NCAA Wrestling Championships for Oklahoma State had at least one happy ending Saturday as heavyweight Jared Rosholt won his third-place match.

Rosholt defeated No. 7-ranked Dan Erekson of Iowa 6-4 to give the Cowboys a 16th-place finish in the team standings.

Rosholt and Erekson were deadlocked at zero before Rosholt scored on an escape to start the second period. Erekson countered with a takedown to take a 2-1 lead. Rosholt scored again on an escape and recorded two takedowns in the final period.

"We got into a situation early in the third where he was trying to secure his win and I was trying to come back,” Rosholt said. "I took the lead and he was in a spot at the end where he needed to go for it all and I just beat him to it.”

Rosholt beat Kent State’s Jermail Porter 3-1 to advance to the third-place match.

"I’m excited for him because he improved from his fourth-place finish last year,” OSU coach John Smith said. "It’s not what he wanted, but he battled his way through the consolation bracket and ended his season on a positive note. I’m proud of him.”

By virtue of his third-place finish, Rosholt is the 423rd All-American in Oklahoma State wrestling history and he extended OSU’s streak of having at least one All-American at every NCAA Championship in which it has competed.

Oklahoma, which didn’t have a wrestler in the finals, finished in 31st place in the team standings.
