OSU football notebook: Cowboys will try to tame Texas' pass rush

The Longhorns rank second in the Big 12 with 26 sacks. Defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat has seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss.

Texas brings a formidable pass rush into Saturday's game against Oklahoma State, with the Longhorns ranking second in the Big 12 with 26 sacks and defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat tallying seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss.

That will, of course, present a challenge for a Cowboy offensive line that leads the Big 12 with eight sacks allowed so far this season. But it will also test quarterback Clint Chelf's ability to make fast — and correct — decisions.

“Getting rid of the ball quickly is something we always want to stress to our quarterbacks,” offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich said. “Obviously recognizing the defensive fronts and practicing against some of their favorite blitzes will help us know what to look for.

“The pre-snap looks — the two or three seconds before the ball is snapped — are critical. We want to make sure we're going at an upbeat tempo and dictating the pace of the game. We don't want to give them a chance to adjust.”

CHARLIE MOORE'S FAMILY FULL OF TEXAS EXES

Seventy-one Oklahoma State players are from the state of Texas. Receiver Charlie Moore was particularly connected to the University of Texas growing up, as his parents and older brother all attended the school.

Moore estimates he went to about 15 Longhorn games at Royal-Memorial Stadium as a kid. He was a big Ricky Williams fan. He remembers being in the stands when Cedric Benson made his Senior Night run around the stadium. He calls Austin a “great city.”
