Lake Eufaula's annual Crappiethon promotion will run March 10 through May 8 with the big one-day crappie tournament scheduled for Saturday, April 7.
Lake Texoma will also host a Crappiethon, but Grand Lake was dropped from the schedule this year.
Tagged crappie caught during Crappiethons will be worth various amounts of money up to $65,000 for "Tangle Free Tom," sponsored by Johnson Reels. Anglers who catch tagged fish must be registered ($6) in advance to qualify for the cash prizes. Entry badges are available at numerous lake-area businesses where tagged crappie may also be checked in.
In addition to the basic prize for catching a tagged crappie, sponsors will pay bonus money to contestants who catch tagged fish with their equipment or baits. Randy Pinney, Eufaula Crappiethon director, said 2,481 tagged crappie will be released before the March 10 kickoff.
They will be collected during a $20 per team tagging tournament March 3-4. Registration for that event will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, March 2, at Eufaula High School, where a crappie clinic will also be conducted.
Entry fee for the team tournament is $50. The event will be headquartered at Eufaula Cove. A seminar for participants is set for 7 p.m. the night before the tourney at the Checotah Multi-Purpose Building, old U.S. 69 and I-40. Late registrants may sign up at the seminar or before takeoff Saturday morning. A $5 late charge will be assessed, however.
