A Colbert man died Monday after a crash in Bryan County when a driver tried to elude police, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

Shortly before 1 a.m., Neil Allen Johnston, 31, was a passenger in the back seat of a vehicle driven by Kellis Glenn Barnett, 26, of Colbert.

Barnett was driving south on a county road just south of Colbert. The car was traveling at a high rate of speed trying to elude a Colbert police car, troopers said.

Barnett tried to make a right turn onto another county road, and the vehicle went off the road and struck a tree, troopers said.

Johnston died at the scene. Barnett declined medical treatment, and another passenger, Skylar Renee Justice, 21, of Cartwright, was taken to a hospital in Denison, Texas, and admitted.

Troopers said no one in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt.
