CRESCENT — A woman who was killed in what police called a staged home invasion robbery died of asphyxiation from a plastic bag that was placed over her head while her wrists and ankles were bound, according to an autopsy report released this week.
Monica Schemm, 49, of Crescent, died June 12. Her husband, Mark Alan Schemm, 52, was arrested and is charged with killing his wife of more than 25 years.
According to the autopsy report, the couple's son said Monica Schemm had begged her husband to kill her. She suffered a malignant brain tumor in 1991 and a severe fall in 2003 that left her brain damaged.
The son called 911 on June 12 after returning to the home from work. Mark Schemm first told sheriff's deputies two men broke into the home, tied them up and put bags over their heads while they robbed the house.
Schemm said he managed to bite a hole in the bag around his head. He later admitted killing his wife and staging the robbery, saying his wife begged him to kill her because she could not commit suicide, authorities said.
