One person was killed in a multiple-vehicle accident that sparked a large fire Tuesday afternoon in Bethany.

Bethany police and fire crews responded to the wreck about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday that involved a pickup, a U-Haul truck and three other vehicles near NW 28 and N Rockwell Avenue, Bethany police Deputy Chief John Reid said.

The crash ignited a gas line near a neighborhood, causing a fire that engulfed the pickup and parts of the U-Haul truck. It took Bethany firefighters about an hour to extinguish the gas line fire. The house nearest to the fire was vacant and was not damaged.

Oklahoma Natural Gas workers turned off the gas line after the fire was put out, and paramedics examined one person involved in the accident. No one was taken to the hospital, Reid said.

Oklahoma City police were assisting in investigating the fatal crash, Reid said. Police did not identify the person killed.

Tanya Parks is the manager of Cave Creek Apartments, 3037 N Rockwell Ave., and was watering plants near the apartment’s entrance when she heard the collision.

She and a friend ran toward the accident and saw the flames shoot up to the height of the trees. “It was like a fireball, Parks said.

“The flames were already up over the trees. There was a guy who climbed out of the U-Haul, and he was a bit disoriented, and he said there was a guy in the pickup,” Parks said. “We stood down there with him until the police showed up.”

Parks said the person in the pickup never got out.
