Alex Davis of Plainview and Regan Ward of Beggs, finished first and second in the 3A and below division of the Cowboy Jamboree last Saturday in Stillwater.

The Cowboy Jamboree is one the biggest meets of the high school cross country season, attracting teams from across Oklahoma as well as Kansas, Texas, Missouri and Arkansas. It is the oldest cross country race in the country, dating back to 1937.

Mikayla Miller of Plainview was fourth and Cheyenne Choate of Hennessey finished fifth. Plainview won the team title.

Davis, Ward and Choate are seniors and each has won a state 3A cross country championship.

Ward won Class 3A as a freshman, Choate won the 3A state title as a sophomore and Davis captured the 3A crown last year as a junior.

Choate also is the defending state 2A cross country champion. However, Hennessey is Class 3A again this season so the past three gold medalists in 3A will race against each other at the state cross country meet on Oct. 20.

Hennessey coach Mike Driskill, who has been a track and cross country coach in Oklahoma for 29 years, calls Davis and Ward the two best female distance runners ever in Oklahoma.

Davis twice broke the state record for the 2-mile run twice last season in track before Ward beat her at the 2012 Meet of Champions and set the current record of 10:38.38.

HELMS, SMITH CONTINUE TO BATTLE

Emily Helms of Mustang and Jaci Smith of Edmond North, two contenders for the 6A cross country title, continue to take turns beating each other.

This time it was Helms, the defending 6A state champion, who bested Smith in the Cowboy Jamboree. The two runners are now 2-2 going head to head against each other this season.
