MIAMI (AP) — Florida International University is building a new rehearsal facility for performers aboard Royal Caribbean cruises.

The $20 million facility with three-story high studios and state-of-the-art rigging systems is expected to open in 2015. It also will include a 300-seat theater and space for costume creation and storage.

In a statement from FIU, Royal Caribbean Chairman and CEO Richard Fain says the facility will make it possible to produce increasingly sophisticated shows for Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises.

Officials say Royal Caribbean performers will live in existing student housing, and new housing will be built for FIU students.

The agreement announced this week allows access to training, internships and research opportunities in the hospitality and cruise industries for FIU students.
