Cruz Azul stays top of Mexican standings

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Cruz Azul moved into first position in Mexico's first division Clausura championship after Saturday's 4-0 victory over Veracruz in the fourth round of matches.

Toluca is second, level on points with Cruz Azul, following its 2-0 win against Monterrey on Sunday.

America won 2-1 at Atlas and is third, one point behind the leaders, while Pachuca also had an away win, 3-1 at Leon, and is fourth, three points off top spot.

The other teams to win on the road were Chiapas, which overcame Puebla 3-2, and Pumas UNAM, which had a 2-1 win at Tigres UANL. The other games ended: Atlante 1, Guadalajara 1; Tijuana 1, Morelia 0, and Queretaro 0, Santos Laguna 0.

Joao Rojas converted for Cruz Azul in the 29th minute with Colombian Luis Perea heading in the second in the 38th and Mariano Pavone netting the third just before halftime.

Marco Fabian wrapped up the game in the 79th after finishing an intricate passing move he had initiated.

Toluca's first came through a Paulo da Silva header in the 3rd and Juan Salgueiro made it 2-0 nine minutes from the end with a first-time strike from the edge of the penalty area.

America got two second half goals from Colombian Luis Gabriel Rey to come from behind at Atlas. Rodrigo Millar had put Atlas ahead in the 41st.

Pachuca's Ecuadorian Enner Valencia scored in the 23rd and the 74th, with Alex Colon getting the team's second in the 56th. Mauro Boselli scored a consolation for Leon from the penalty spot in the 89th.
