NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — The Cyprus Football Association has named Pambos Christodoulou as the new national team coach.

The CFA said on its website Wednesday that the 46-year-old Cypriot will be in charge through qualifying for Euro 2016.

Christodoulou takes over from Nikos Nioplias who resigned last September after Cyprus' poor showing in World Cup qualifying.

Christodoulou enjoyed a stellar season two years ago with AEL Limassol which he led to the Cyprus championship, the first time the team had won the title after a 44-year drought.

Under Christodoulou, AEL also reached the Europa League group stage for the first time in its history.

Christodoulou's playing career included stints with Olympiakos Nicosia and AEK Larnaca.
