D-FW draft series: Ex-Stanford, Hurst Bell DE Josh Mauro has rare NFL size and stature

Each year the Dallas-Fort Worth area churns out some of the best football players in the country. Several of them are good enough to make it in the NFL. Here is a look at some of the best local prospects who have a chance to be selected in this year’s NFL Draft:

Josh Mauro

Position: Defensive End

High School: Hurst L.D. Bell

College: Stanford

Height: 6-6

Weight: 271

What he’s done: A former standout at Hurst L.D. Bell who was named to The Dallas Morning News’ All-Area team, Mauro proved an effective pass rusher at Stanford. He was also versatile, playing inside and even lining up at nose tackle. He collected 11 sacks and 21 ½ tackles for loss in his career, impressive numbers for defensive lineman in a 3-4 scheme. As a senior, Mauro was an honorable mention selection on the All-PAC 12 team. In February, he attended the NFL combine, where he authored a decent performance. Mauro ran the 40-yard dash in 5.21 seconds, did 21 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press and completed the three-cone drill in 7.43 seconds. Later, at his pro day, he impressed scouts when he did 29 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.

Why he should be picked in the draft: Even though Mauro doesn’t have great speed, he is considered an intriguing prospect because of his stature. After all, 6-6, 271-pound defensive ends don’t grow on trees. The fact that Mauro has experience in a 3-4 scheme should help. It’s easier for players to transition to the 4-3 than vice versa. Mauro’s Stanford connection should also serve him well. The program has produced many quality NFL players in recent years – from Richard Sherman to Andrew Luck and Coby Fleener. The Cardinal has a reputation for churning out hard-working professionals.
