"It was horrific," said Burns, who has been a prosecutor for more than a decade.
The Rev. Carol Daniels, 61, apparently was preparing for a morning service when she was killed inside the church. Daniels's death was a homicide, and she died from "multiple sharp-force injuries," the state medical examiner's office said today.
The cause and manner of death were released in response to an Open Records request filed by The Oklahoman.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Daniels' death. Officials ask anyone with information to call the OSBI at (800) 522-8017.
Investigators have been tight-lipped about the crime scene. Anadarko police and Caddo County sheriff's officials referred questions to the OSBI. Bureau spokeswoman Jessica Brown would not release further details today.
Cherokee Ballard, spokeswoman for the state medical examiner's office, said Daniels' autopsy was completed Monday, but investigators with OSBI asked that no details about the pastor's death be released. Brown said investigators feared release of further details would hamper the investigation.
Burns, who is working with the OSBI on the case, said he could not share any details, except to dispel rumors that the pastor had been crucified.
