Customers flocked to the new Dairy Queen “Grill and Chill” Wednesday at 2301 Telephone Road in Moore. The new Dairy Queen opened its doors New Year's Day, marking the return of the chain to the Oklahoma City metro area after a decadelong absence. Central Oklahoma was once a bastion for the ice cream shops, with Dunn's Dairy Queen having started up the 17th franchise in the country in 1947 and growing the operation to 31 stores in the region. But a sale of the franchise stores, legal disputes and a bankruptcy resulted in the Oklahoma City area stores disappearing in the 1990s.
