It's imperative for the Dallas Cowboys to get off to a fast start before their bye week or risk falling out of the NFC East race before the schedule becomes more manageable the second half of the season.

NFC East loaded, again

Playing in a conference loaded with playoff contenders there's a chance only one NFC East team qualifies for the playoffs — the team that wins the division.

Grabbing a wild card spot will be difficult with the NFC East matched against the AFC North (Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cincinnati and Cleveland) in the inter-conference rotation and NFC South (New Orleans, Atlanta, Carolina and Tampa Bay) in the intra-conference rotation.

The Giants, Eagles and Cowboys are quality teams. But how do they stack up with the league's elite? The NFC East will be tested.

Division showdowns essentially are worth two games. The NFC East team that posts the best division record probably will own tiebreaker avantages that could be the difference.

A dozen NFC East games — starting with Dallas' opening the season in the Meadowlands — will have a big say whether it's the Giants, Eagles or Cowboys representing the division in the playoffs.

at NY Giants

The Dallas Cowboys' opener Wednesday night is a tough test against their old nemesis, the defending Super Bowl champions.

Sept. 16

at Seattle

The Cowboys have won the past three meetings against the Seahawks, all at home, but haven't won in Seattle since 2004.

Sept. 23

Tampa Bay

The Cowboys' home opener is a must win against Josh Freeman and the Buccaneers, who are regrouping under a new coach.

Oct. 1

Chicago

A Monday Night showdown at Jerry World the week before their bye week could be a tell-tale game. Chicago won in Dallas two years ago.

Oct. 14

at Baltimore

The Cowboys have never beaten the Ravens (0-3) who are 15-1 at home over the past two seasons.

Oct. 21

at Carolina

Dallas has won eight of the past nine meetings. The only loss the past 15 years was in 2004 in the playoffs.

Oct. 28

New York Giants

Owner Jerry Jones' pre-training camp “kick Giants butts” comment is stemmed in frustration. Giants have won five of the last six meetings.
