Darnell Mayberry: Thunder should consider trading up for Victor Oladipo

Thunder beat writer Darnell Mayberry answered questions from readers Friday, with plenty of the conversation surrounding the upcoming draft, where OKC holds the 12th, 29th and 32nd pick.

Darnell Mayberry 10:59 a.m. Greetings, ladies and gents.
Mobar 11:00 a.m. Who is your favorite big that the Thunder have a good shot at getting at 12?
Darnell Mayberry 11:01 a.m. Ugh. Do I have to pick one? Does the Thunder have to pick one? I'm not high on any of them. All seem to have glaring flaws. But if I had to pick one, I'd say Cody Zeller if he's there. But he's got to get tougher.
Mobar 11:02 a.m. With the Thunder needing to improve in the post do you see them replacing Cheeks with an ex post player ala the Bobcats with Ewing?
Darnell Mayberry 11:02 a.m. No. They already have that guy, assistant coach Mark Bryant.
cthundr 11:02 a.m. So what do they do with Perk?
Darnell Mayberry 11:02 a.m. Play him 20-25 minutes next year.
Nate 11:03 a.m. Is Mike Muscala a possibility with the late 1st or early 2nd round pick?
Darnell Mayberry 11:05 a.m. I don't see why not. That 32nd pick is just sitting there waiting for Presti to get a steal. And, remember, that's the pick that originally belonged to the Bobcats that the Thunder got back from Houston in the trade that sent James Harden to the Rockets. So anybody who has already judged the Harden trade as a failure, let's see what happens with 12 and 32 this year.
Guest 11:05 a.m. Why would the Thunder want to trade down in this draft like you suggested yesterday? I think they should package at least two of their picks and try to move up as much as they can and get the one player that Presti likes the most. I disagree with the sentiment that this is a "weak draft". It is weak if the team with the first choice is looking for a Lebron, but other than that, I see several good players who should have a nice NBA career. Which is why I say try to move up and get a better pick
Darnell Mayberry 11:08 a.m. I agree with you on the strength of this draft, Which is why I think it's worth being open to trading down with Atlanta. Get two for the price of one so to speak. Picks four through 15 could all be the same caliber of player when it's all said and done. And I don't see much difference between the caliber of player you can get at 12 and 18. So instead of risking swinging big and missing big at No. 12 (or taking a bigger cut by moving up), why not trade down with Atlanta and try your hand at two guys?
Drew 11:08 a.m. Should the Thunder trade up in the draft to pick Oladipo? If so who should they give up?
Darnell Mayberry 11:10 a.m. That's the only realistic guy I'd trade up for. I say realistic because the Thunder probably doesn't have what it takes (better yet not willing to give up what it takes) to get into the top three. Oladipo is probably a top five pick (or at least he should be) but he probably won't go in the top three.
Podirk 11:10 a.m. Of the draftees written about on NewsOK whom do you like?
Darnell Mayberry 11:12 a.m. Each one offers something that's intriguing. But each one comes with major concerns. I like the guy I wrote about today, Mason Plumlee. And as I tried to get across in the article, if you focus on what he does well you could see him really fitting in well with the Thunder simply as a rebounder and finisher.
Podirk 11:12 a.m. Trade 12 for 17,18 draft Plumlee and Karasev (stash for 1 year) draft Giannis or Withey at 29 and call it a draft.
Darnell Mayberry 11:12 a.m. What about 32?
Podirk 11:12 a.m. Any more workouts since the WHO HAS WORKEDOUT column?
Darnell Mayberry 11:12 a.m. I'm sure there have been more. But I don't know who.
Brandon 11:12 a.m. would it be disappointing if the Thunder traded out of this draft completely ?
Darnell Mayberry 11:13 a.m. I'm 99 percent sure that won't happen. But to answer your question, yes it would be.
Podirk 11:13 a.m. Lamb, Jones, Orton, Liggins, 12, 29, 32....that's half a team of young guys. Whose out this season/next season in your opinion?
Darnell Mayberry 11:14 a.m. Well, I can almost assure you that 12, 29 and 32 won't all be on the roster next year. And I'd be surprised if Lamb, Jones, Orton and Liggins went anywhere.
Drew 11:14 a.m. Would it be worth trading Jackson, Lamb, Jones and the 12th pick to get the 1st pick in the draft?
Darnell Mayberry 11:14 a.m. No.
Thunder up 11:14 a.m. Do you think a guy like Tony Mitchell might be a good target to play the Leonard, George role on defense potentially for the Thunder. Similar college stats to Leonard, long super athletic. The Thunder gave up 107 ppg to the teams that went small against us this yr (Miami, ny, Denver, Houston). We don't have a matchup to guard Lebron, Carole, parsons, chandler etc...)
Darnell Mayberry 11:15 a.m. Tony Mitchell is not the answer. Kevin Durant needs to be the answer. It's time he steps up on defense.
Guest 11:15 a.m. Saw a report yesterday that said the Thunder are informing prospects and agents of players available with the 29th pick that the player will most likely see alot of time in the D-league next season and seeing if they're receptive to that.
Darnell Mayberry 11:16 a.m. Not sure how that's news.
TheBaller 11:16 a.m. Should the Thunder go after Greg Oden?
Darnell Mayberry 11:16 a.m. I floated that idea long ago. That ship might have sailed.
Podirk 11:16 a.m. So 65 mill in guaranteed contracts and 3 mill in non guaranteed contracts. Add a rookie contract or two and that's not much room for MLE cause Thunder, surely, won't be going over the Lux Tax this year with 2 years of it coming up.
Darnell Mayberry 11:17 a.m. True.
RCK 11:17 a.m. I have been wondering how much better is Oladipo than Jamal Franklin. I would draft O ahead of Franklin, but they are very similar. I am supportive of trading up for Oladipo, but Franklin could be better value. What is your take?
Darnell Mayberry 11:19 a.m. Haven't seen Franklin. Saw a ton of Oladipo. And I love him. Love his skill set. Love his toughness. Love his athleticism. But to your point, that's why moving down a few spots is not a bad idea depending on how the draft plays out. You could potentially get a Franklin and, say, Plumlee at 17 and 18 as opposed to only, say, Olynyk at 12.
Podirk 11:19 a.m. If Mo Cheeks takes Kalamian(sp) with him where do the Thunder look for assistants?
Darnell Mayberry 11:21 a.m. High and low. There are tons of qualified candidates out there that can help Brooks, the rest of the staff and the players. I couldn't begin to provide names. I would think the Thunder isn't ruling anything or anyone out.
Carey 11:21 a.m. Liked your suggestion on acquiring the 17th and 18th pick, if the Thunder were to do that and stay under the luxury tax they'd likely have to part ways with Thabeet, Liggins or Orton. Who do you think would be the odd man out?
Darnell Mayberry 11:23 a.m. I don't think they'd have to part with anybody. Drafting at 17 and 18 requires taking on only $1 million in additional salary than drafting one player at 12.
ThatGuy 11:23 a.m. Do you think the Thunder will trade some of their many assets. Who do you think are some possible trade partners and what do you think they would trade for?
Darnell Mayberry 11:25 a.m. I think there will be some kind of trade on draft night, most likely with the 29th pick. But other than that, I don't see the Thunder trading anything or anybody else. There's always the possibility of Presti pulling the random player we never knew the Thunder even owned rights to of out of the cellar and trading for something minor. But nothing major.
Brian 11:25 a.m. Several teams at the top of the draft are looking to move their picks (Orlando, maybe Washington... even Cleveland). Do you see the Thunder being in play to make such a move? Which player would tempt them?
Darnell Mayberry 11:26 a.m. Anthony Bennett would be intriguing possibly. Of course Noel. But the Thunder would have to give up a ton to move into the top three. I highly doubt that's going to happen.
Guest 11:26 a.m. could you see the thunder drafting Michael Carter Williams if he's available at # 12?
Darnell Mayberry 11:27 a.m. Yes, and I'm writing why for Sunday.
Thomas crump 11:27 a.m. What do you think Jeremy Lamb and Perry Jone III roles will be next season?
Darnell Mayberry 11:27 a.m. I think Lamb will be in the rotation, I think Jones will get spot minutes.
Caleb 11:27 a.m. Houston is looking to Thomas Robinson. Why would the Thunder not look into this?
Darnell Mayberry 11:28 a.m. Robinson makes just enough and the Thunder's payroll is just high enough to where it'd be tricky to pull it off under the rules.
Jeff 11:29 a.m. Is the center position something that concerns the Thunder?
Darnell Mayberry 11:29 a.m. I honestly don't think it is.
harry man 11:29 a.m. jason kidd at nets. please. he is only a KIDD
Darnell Mayberry 11:29 a.m. You and Mike Sherman, harry man. You're both in the same boat not liking the hire. I love it.
Guest 11:29 a.m. What's Wrong With Mike Muscala? Post Up Big Men Can Score, I Think Thunder Should Get Him In Draft.
Darnell Mayberry 11:30 a.m. Not sure if you saw my earlier reply on him. But I said I don't see why he wouldn't be an option. He could be a steal at pick 32.
Jeff 11:30 a.m. Don't you think the Thunder should pursue a spot up three shooter or two this summer?
Darnell Mayberry 11:30 a.m. Why? They have one in Jeremy Lamb. And he's much cheaper.
harry man 11:30 a.m. ok, who will the thunder up take in this years draft. I AM BACK
Darnell Mayberry 11:30 a.m. No clue.
Thomas Crump 11:31 a.m. if the Thunder were to draft a guard who do you think it would be?
Darnell Mayberry 11:31 a.m. Michael Carter-Williams
tom 11:31 a.m. Who do you think is the most likely projected top 10 pick to fall into the teens? Even past the Thunder?
Darnell Mayberry 11:31 a.m. Shabazz Muhammed.
Zach S. 11:31 a.m. In two years, who will be the starting center for OKC? Ibaka or the field?
Darnell Mayberry 11:31 a.m. The field.
Thomas Crump 11:32 a.m. Do you think Kendrick Perkins could give Zeller the toughness he needs?
Darnell Mayberry 11:32 a.m. Couldn't hurt.
Guest 11:32 a.m. Who replaces Bryant then?
Darnell Mayberry 11:32 a.m. He's not going anywhere.
Thomas Crump 11:32 a.m. Who do you think the Thunder should replace Mo Cheeks with?
Darnell Mayberry 11:32 a.m. Haven't given it much thought quite honestly. Not my decision to make.
TP 11:32 a.m. GImme a bold prediction for OKC's rotation next season, potential newcomers included.
Darnell Mayberry 11:33 a.m. 1) Russ, 2) Thabo, 3) KD, 4) Ibaka, 5) Perk, 6) Reggie, 7) Collison, 8) Thabeet 9) Lamb, 10) Jones...sorry, not much bold about that.
Zach S. 11:33 a.m. What will the crunch time lineup be next season?
Darnell Mayberry 11:34 a.m. Probably a lot more small (one-big) lineups.
Guest 11:34 a.m. Assistant coach may be one of the tougher spots for a fan to make a wish list for. Any insight on how Presti will pull his strings?
Darnell Mayberry 11:36 a.m. No insight. It's also tough for media (myself included) in this market because we honestly have little knowledge of what the assistants actually were responsible for. We don't get to watch practices. We don't get to talk to the assistants. We're held out of shoot-arounds. So while I'm sure they're all valuable in their own ways, we really can't offer great insight into what they do.
THUNDER NUTT 11:36 a.m. Twolves are rumored to be getting rid of eithr Barea or Ridnour. Any possiblity we could make a move for one? (salary wise)
Darnell Mayberry 11:36 a.m. Ugh, why?
Darnell Mayberry 11:36 a.m. No.
Morgan 11:37 a.m. I hear the Thunder is interested in Greek prodigy Giannis Adetokunbo... what do you know about him?
Darnell Mayberry 11:37 a.m. That he's Greek. Other than that, nada.
Zach S. 11:37 a.m. If CP3 and D12 end up in Houston, do they automatically leapfrog OKC and SAS as the favorite? Will D12 ever be dominant again?
Darnell Mayberry 11:37 a.m. How'd that work out for the Lakers with Nash and Howard going there?
Brian 11:37 a.m. What, if anything, can the Thunder learn from the way the Spurs and Pacers have matched up with the Heat?
Darnell Mayberry 11:38 a.m. That it helps if you have a dominant big man.
OKCsportsGUY 11:38 a.m. what is most likely draft scenario for the Thunder? do you think they will trade up, trade down or take their picks and go home?
Darnell Mayberry 11:39 a.m. Take their pick, at 12 and maybe even 29. Then see what's on the board at 32. One of 29/32 will be an international, or a college player that will go play international ball.
Beezy 11:39 a.m. Are Westbrook and Rose early candidates for Comeback Player of the Year?
Darnell Mayberry 11:40 a.m. I don't think that award exists anymore. But I don't see why Westbrook would be up for it. He played all 82 games.
Zach S. 11:40 a.m. Re: Perk, you meant 20-25 minutes for the season, right? Not per game.
Darnell Mayberry 11:40 a.m. :)
Darnell Mayberry 11:40 a.m. No.
harry man 11:40 a.m. has anyone in the sports department at the daily oklahoman miss harry man? been gone. looking for gold and a women to marry
Darnell Mayberry 11:40 a.m. What if the woman takes all your gold? Then what?
tom 11:40 a.m. Of all of the potential picks NewsOK has researched, who has the most "Thunder" attitude/personality? The least?
Darnell Mayberry 11:42 a.m. The most: I'd probably say a tie between Plumlee and McCollum. The least: I'd go with Muhammed.
Zach S. 11:42 a.m. Who finishes with a better NBA career: Lamb or PJ3?
Darnell Mayberry 11:42 a.m. Lamb.
Jimbo 11:42 a.m. Any chance Fischer retires and takes a seat alongside Scotty as an assistant?
Darnell Mayberry 11:42 a.m. Who?
mh 11:42 a.m. Which of the following is most likely to get traded: Reggie, Thabo, Perk, Lamb, #12 pick
Darnell Mayberry 11:42 a.m. Depends. When?
Darnell Mayberry 11:43 a.m. This year, none of the above.
Mobar 11:43 a.m. Any chance we see georgios printezis in camp?
Darnell Mayberry 11:43 a.m. Doubt it.
Arthur Casseus 11:43 a.m. I love okc and im a big fan , but please this year get better player in the roster we need to win next year , get a big man and a shooting guard please please please im begging you .
Darnell Mayberry 11:43 a.m. Hahaha.
Brian 11:43 a.m. Which current roster player do you see making a noticeable improvement in his game this off season?
Darnell Mayberry 11:44 a.m. I think Reggie takes another huge step. And I think Lamb will be a contributor.
Jimbo 11:44 a.m. Any comments on trading the 29th and 32nd pick for a 2 guard? It seems like we're getting kinda bottom heavy on rookies and guys with
Darnell Mayberry 11:45 a.m. Jeremy Lamb is a pretty good 2 I'd say. And there are some pretty good ones that could potentially still be on the board then. Tim Hardaway Jr. anyone?
Brian 11:45 a.m. You think we see a Jackson-Lamb backup backcourt in the rotation for next season?
Darnell Mayberry 11:46 a.m. Depends on how much Lamb develops and how much Brooks trusts him. Brooks easily could revert to sticking Thabo back out there with the second unit.
Matt 11:46 a.m. I'm digging Steven Adams. How does he fit in with the Thunder? He looks like Nick Collison 2.0 to me, bigger and faster. What are his strengths/weaknesses?
Darnell Mayberry 11:46 a.m. If he's Nick Collison, he's Nick Collison 10.0. Because that dude is way more athletic than Collison ever was.
Guest 11:47 a.m. I Like Liggins But I Think Thunder Should Draft Goodwin, Not Scared To Drive To The Rim Has Waay More Offensive young And Has Defense
Darnell Mayberry 11:47 a.m. I wouldn't mind seeing him get selected with the 32nd pick and come in to learn under Westbrook. I was just saying that to someone yesterday.
Jeff 11:47 a.m. This year was a disappointment, but I'm sure Brooks job is safe due to the Westbrook injury. What would it take the front office to look for a different head coach?
Darnell Mayberry 11:48 a.m. Pretty sure two more years of falling short will put Brooks on the hot seat.
OKCsportsGUY 11:48 a.m. Do we have any idea of what the Thunder are thinking at the 2 guard next season? Thabo/?
Darnell Mayberry 11:48 a.m. Thabo and Jeremy Lamb...with a heavy dose of a Jackson/Westbrook platoon.
Karl Gavin 11:48 a.m. I know Kevin Martin said he would like to come back next year but how much of a pay cut do you think he would ok with? Also, if we pay him somewhere around 5-6 mil why not raise the bar and go after someone like Andre Iguodala and pay a little more, like 6-8 mil over like 4 years.
Darnell Mayberry 11:49 a.m. Because that's going into tax territory. The Thunder is not going to pay anybody that much money, probably not even Kevin Martin, which is why I doubt he's coming back.
Guest 11:49 a.m. I can't believe he 6'7 but Dejaun Blair Would A Good Pick Up in off Season.
Darnell Mayberry 11:49 a.m. He's great at what he does that's for sure.
Jimbo 11:49 a.m. If the Suns take a big, any chance we could trade 29, 32, and PJ3 for Gorat?
Darnell Mayberry 11:50 a.m. I wouldn't trade PJ3 for Gortat straight up. And you want to give them 29 and 32 in addition to that?
Karl Gavin 11:50 a.m. Any word on the player the Thunder has over in Germany?
Darnell Mayberry 11:51 a.m. Yeah, he's said he's staying in Germany for at least another season. By all accounts, he's progressing well though.
Karl Gavin 11:51 a.m. I love Mason Plumlee from Duke... what do you think?
Darnell Mayberry 11:52 a.m. I'm starting to really like him too. I wrote about him today in case you missed it. Check it out: http://newsok.com/oklahoma-city-thunder-what-nba-draft-prospect-mason-plumlee-has-that-the-others-dont/article/3849326
ThatGuy 11:52 a.m. Do you think the Thunder will re-sign Kevin MArtin?
Darnell Mayberry 11:52 a.m. No.
Carey 11:52 a.m. If their at 67.7 million now and the 17th and 18th picks cost them 3.1 mill yr one approx that would put them a half million over, unless the tax goes up
Darnell Mayberry 11:53 a.m. It's projected to increase.
Darnell Mayberry 11:53 a.m. And both picks don't have to be signed this year.
Karl Gavin 11:53 a.m. is there any chance the Thnder go after Shabazz Muhammd?
Darnell Mayberry 11:53 a.m. There's a chance. But he has a ton of question marks. This team historically avoids those guys.
Guest 11:54 a.m. I Like Nate Wolters At pg , Could Be Uh JJ Redick For Us.
Darnell Mayberry 11:54 a.m. Didn't see much of him this year (obviously). But he showed some heart and toughness in the tournament. Loved that about him.
Jeremy 11:54 a.m. Any news on KMart? Will the Thunder do anything in free agency?
Darnell Mayberry 11:55 a.m. Better prepare for a quiet summer, Jeremy.
Jimbo 11:55 a.m. Derek Fischer
Darnell Mayberry 11:55 a.m. Oh. Derek FISHER...He still wants to play. He's not ready to coach. At least that's what he said.
Karl Gavin 11:55 a.m. do you think that any player the Thunder draft at 12 or 29 will play any real tick during the season?
Darnell Mayberry 11:56 a.m. No.
Brian 11:56 a.m. Any chance an Asst. coach is brought in who can actually draw up plays for the team & Brooks?
Darnell Mayberry 11:56 a.m. There's always a chance. Who that is, I can't begin to tell you.
America 11:56 a.m. Why does everyone want change? Just get healthy, that's all OKC needs
Darnell Mayberry 11:57 a.m. It's not all the Thunder needs. But trust me when I tell you I hear your point. Happens every off-season. I don't understand it. About 27 other teams would kill to have the Thunder's roster as is.
Europe 11:57 a.m. Wont you trade up for Len?
Darnell Mayberry 11:57 a.m. Nope.
Karl Gavin 11:57 a.m. if the Thunder like Perkins so much do you think they'll extend a offer to him after his current contract is up?
Darnell Mayberry 11:58 a.m. Not at the going rate.
Jimbo 11:58 a.m. Give us a crazy prediction that'll make us think you've been hitting the rock- but a fairly plausible, crack smoking prediction.
Darnell Mayberry 11:58 a.m. Not sure I want to give that impression. Lol. Good try though.
Europe 11:59 a.m. Is Nogueira having a chance? I've seen him in Estudiantes and I wont pick it as high as he is going
Darnell Mayberry 12:00 p.m. Maybe he slips. We don't know. These projections always seem to have somebody higher than they end up going.
Phil 12:00 p.m. If Russ didnt get hurt , I say its Heat and Thunder playing now. You agree? And sorry to say, Heat probably winner.
Darnell Mayberry 12:00 p.m. Not sure the Thunder would have been able to get past San Antonio.
Guest 12:00 p.m. is it just me or is Houston getting real scary real qiuck?
Darnell Mayberry 12:00 p.m. Meh. Sound the alarm when they climb higher than the eighth seed.
EE 12:01 p.m. Isnt Shabazz a guy to consider if he falls? I see a ton of talent in him (And i dont like MCW, btw)
Darnell Mayberry 12:02 p.m. You don't like MCW but you like Muhammed? OK. Uh, sure, the Thunder might have to consider Muhammed. But like I said earlier, he's got a ton of question marks about his game/personality, as well as a ton a baggage that comes from his father. So the Thunder would have to weigh the cost-benefit of being associated with that.
karl gavin 12:02 p.m. whose better Thabeet or Ortin
Darnell Mayberry 12:02 p.m. Based on what we've seen, Thabeet. Orton hasn't gotten a chance to show what he can do, though.
Darnell Mayberry 12:04 p.m. Thanks for joining us today. Until next time...
