David Cornwell could hardly believe it when he heard the news.

Cornwell’s attorney, Mitch McCuistian, called him a few minutes after 3 p.m. Friday with some important news.

Cornwell will be able to play at Norman North this season.

Cornwell was granted an extra semester of eligibility by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association.

“I literally screamed out loud I was so happy,” Cornwell said. “It’s a great feeling and a great relief. I’m ready to go hit it hard now.”

Cornwell, one of the top quarterback recruits nationally for the 2014 class, had to apply for the extra semester after missing the fall 2011 semester while his mother was ill.

The hardship was originally denied, leading to a Tuesday appeal in front of the board of directors.

After new evidence was presented, the board voted to send the case back to the OSSAA staff for review and set a special meeting for June 12 if the application was denied.

That meeting won’t be necessary though.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound pro-style quarterback has offers that include Oklahoma State, Alabama, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Tennessee among others.

He has a visit to Stillwater scheduled for early next week, though it appears unlikely he’ll head to Oklahoma State after South Carolina product Mason Rudolph committed to the Cowboys earlier this week.

“I’ll still stop by and see Coach (Mike) Gundy,” Cornwell said. “I talked to (Cowboys offensive coordinator Mike) Yurcich and congratulated him on the pickup. But I’m still planning on going for the visit. Even if that’s not where I’m going, I want to keep that relationship with them.”
