ENID — Prosecutors this week charged an Enid woman with abusing a 6-month-old child in her unlicensed day care center.

Kimberly D. Coulter, 22, was charged Tuesday in Garfield County District Court with one count of child abuse. Coulter is accused of shaking a boy who was in her care, according to an affidavit signed by Enid police Detective Quent Tubbs.

An investigation into Coulter's home day care found that she was operating illegally, said Mary Leaver, a state Department of Human Services spokeswoman.

DHS also suspected child abuse, which was turned over to the district attorney's office in May.

Coulter agreed to cease operating an unlicensed day care center Dec. 8, a day after a child in her care had to be rushed to the hospital. However, in April, Coulter inquired with DHS about opening a licensed day care center, Leaver said.

Boy had two brain injuries
Tegan Corr was taken to the hospital after Coulter said the child's eyes rolled back in his head as she tried to feed him with a bottle. Medical tests showed Tegan had brain injury consistent with child abuse, according to court documents.

Additional tests showed the infant had two separate injuries to his brain: a month-old injury to his frontal lobe and a new injury to the top of his head.

Relearning everything
Tegan Corr's father told the Enid News and Eagle that his son spent 32 days in the hospital, 13 of which were spent on life support. Kevin Corr said Tegan has undergone weekly physical therapy since he has been able to, and is having to relearn "basically everything.”

"He didn't crawl until just recently,” he said of the now 15-month-old boy.
