Deal gets gas guzzlers off nation’s roadways

Thinking about buying a new car? Don’t forget the "cash for clunkers” option, if you have a gas guzzler.

It provides $3,500 or $4,500 vouchers, enticements to get you to trade in your old vehicle for a new fuel-efficient one — worth less than $45,000.

For more details about the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act, go to cars.gov or nhtsa.dot.gov.

The money is available courtesy of the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act, signed into law nearly two weeks ago.

But not everyone may qualify to get the vouchers. Before you rush to the nearest dealer, make sure your old vehicle was made after 1984 and is still in drivable condition (only to be crushed or shredded when it’s turned in). When you turn over the keys, it has to be for a vehicle that continuously was insured for at least one year.

Its combined fuel efficiency must be 18 mph or less. In exchange, the new vehicle’s fuel efficiency value should be 22 mpg — 18 mpg for things such as SUVs, pickups and minivans.

The amount of the voucher would depend on how much more fuel efficient the new vehicle is than what the government considers a polluting clunker.

Another thing to consider is the value of the trade-in.

A vehicle that’s valued more than $4,500 may not be a smart trade.

There are still some rules about this program to be resolved.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will have those ready to implement the program by July 24, but transactions beginning July 1 through Nov. 1 that meet stated requirements will be honored.

"When you turn over the keys, it has to be for a vehicle that continuously was insured for at least one year". This doesn't make sense. I parked the clunker a month ago and it was insured up to that point. But I couldn't afford to insure 3 vehicles so I dropped it when I purchased a newer one a couple weeks ago. It drives fine but its just not insured. I was going to Ebay or Craigs list it anyway and just get cash for it. I don't buy from dealerships anyway.

Did I read this correctly? I can get a voucher, worth at least $3500, to trade in a vehicle with 18 mpg for another vehicle with 18 mpg? This is a genius piece of legislation!

Lawerence, OKC, I drive a 1990 model car that gets 26 MPG. I can get a voucher for a new pickup that gets 18. This is government thinking at its best.

More BS from "Yours Truely". How many people driving a 1983 vehicle either wnat to get rid of it or can get rid of it. They either love that vehicle or they can't afford anything else. The paper and time used to come up with this legislation is a waste of our resources! We need some leadership in DC - QUICK!

Hilarious...my 25mpg Mustang is considered "Fuel Efficient"...that's a laugh and a half.

And the domestic issues have worsened in the last six months.

John, will a Publican cower in a corner with North Korea like King Obama has? Obama is the only one, Democrat or Republican that would hide behind his mother in laws skirt and say nothing at all about the threats North Korea is spewing.
UnSub, Yukon - Jul 5, 2009 at 6:51 pm
Hey Rich, let's put the Publicans back in power and watch them bomb another 3rd world country to draw the public's attention away from domestic issues.

FYI, the voucher goes to the dealer, not the car buyer...

A friend just bought a new pick up. He didn't have a government voucher worth $3,500 or $4,500. He bought a $40,000 pick up for $24,700..... These vouchers are a joke...

More idiocy from our federal government.
Brock, Beaver - Jul 5, 2009 at 3:18 pm
LOL....we all know most people will end up getting screwed by the dealerships and probably see a net Zilch benefit of the cash for crap(i.e. inflated price of the vehicle, inflated interest rates if financed from the dealership....etc).

So, we as taxpayers are now buying vehicles that get less than stellar gas mileage, and crushing them. And let me guess, it's all in an effort to reduce . . . Global Warming!!! How long are we going to let this hoax bankrupt our country?
Brian, Moore - Jul 5, 2009 at 9:44 am
This makes me wish I kept my old beater pickup that got 9 mpg. Alas it was made in 1983 and would not qualify. Still though the money offered is more than some of those older vehicles are worth. I'd still check on what parting out or the junkyard would offer before that. Also, since the vehicle is going to be crushed there is no need to keep all the interior or exterior. Sell the tires and put on old bald ones, sell off the interior including the seats, the windows, bumpers, everything that can come off without making the vehicle undrivable. :)

Placing SUVs and pickups in the picture as 'fuel efficient' vehicles is typical government stupidity.
