Dr. Gregory L. Skuta, president and CEO of the Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City, has been elected as president-elect of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The academy is the world's largest association of ophthalmologists — medical doctors specializing in comprehensive medical and surgical eye care.

Skuta will serve as president-elect this year and as president in 2014.

An ophthalmologist, clinical researcher, educator and administrator, Skuta has led the Dean McGee Eye Institute since 2009. Also the Edward L. Gaylord professor and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology in the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Skuta presided over the completion of the institute's 78,000-square-foot, $46 million expansion. The institute has more than 300 faculty and staff, and consistently ranks among the top eye institutes in the nation for funding from the National Institutes of Health and Research to Prevent Blindness.

Dr. David Parke, who led the Dean McGee Eye Institute 1992 to 2009, termed Skuta's election “overwhelming.”

“For the past six years, he has served as its senior secretary for clinical education, leading its global continuing medical education programs,” Parke said. “He is well-known and respected as an educator, a clinician, and a clinical investigator. Equally important, he is recognized as a critical and strategic thinker, and as a fine man.
