AMSTERDAM (AP) — Defender Jairo Riedewald scored twice on his league debut for Ajax to give the defending champion a 2-1 victory at Roda JC on Sunday that saw Frank de Boer's team go top of the Eredivisie in the last round before the winter break.
Riedewald's dream debut lasted only 15 minutes, but he packed in plenty of action. The 17-year-old Riedewald scored eight minutes after coming on in the 80th and again in stoppage time to allow Ajax to take over the league lead from Vitesse Arnhem on goal difference.
Vitesse gave away a two-goal lead Saturday night to draw 2-2 with Heracles Almelo.
Riedewald became the youngest player to score on debut in the Eredivisie, taking the honor that Marco van Basten had held since 1982, Dutch media reported.
"I don't score many goals," Riedewald told national broadcaster NOS. "I might look calm but on the inside I'm ... super happy."
Midfielder Lex Immers scored twice Saturday as 4th-placed Feyenoord beat PEC Zwolle 3-0 and FC Twente could only manage a 1-1 draw with RKC Waalwijk on Friday night.
