Back to school was a whole new experience for nearly 800 Deer Creek School District students.

As students lined up Tuesday outside the new Deer Creek Middle School, which was built on more than 40 acres of land off Sorghum Mill Road between May and Pennsylvania avenues, they celebrated the first day of school and the grand opening of the $36 million, 157,000-square-foot-building.

The school took two years to build and has many architectural and artistic features, such as a two-story waterfall in the main entrance, four entryway murals depicting Oklahoma history and 12 other murals in the hallways depicting Oklahoma scenery and wildlife.
