Deer Creek school board member Jacob Mays, 31, was found dead in his home from an apparent suicide, according to a police report.

Mays, an alumnus of the school district, was elected to the board in 2011 and represented Ward 1.

Oklahoma City police responded to a call from a neighbor on July 4 asking them to search Mays' home.

The officer found Mays locked in his home at 13113 Box Canyon Road with an apparent self-inflicted knife wound, according to the report. The state medical examiner's office had not ruled on cause of death on Tuesday.

Mays worked for MidFirst Bank in Oklahoma City as vice president and director of information technology.

“He was passionate about having the best in academics and extracurricular programs,” Superintendent Ranet Tippens said in a news release. “He was always a champion for the children. His presence in all of our lives will be greatly missed. Our condolences go out to family and friends in this time of great loss.”

School board president Danny Barnes said Mays “was an inspiration for all who worked with him.”

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Crossings Community Church. has disabled the comments for this article.
