A man who is charged with plotting to bomb dozens of Ottawa County churches has been found mentally competent to stand trial, clearing the way for him to pursue an insanity defense.

U.S. Magistrate Paul Cleary found this week that Gregory Arthur Weiler II is able to understand the nature and consequences of the proceedings against him and to assist in his defense. Those are the criteria for competency.

Weiler, 25, was ruled mentally incompetent by Cleary on April 3 and was committed to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. Cleary issued an order Monday saying the prosecution and defense have stipulated to the findings in a report by a medical doctor and a psychologist who each treated and evaluated Weiler at a federal facility in Butner, N.C.
