OU defense does its job in loss to Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. — In losses to Brigham Young and Miami, Oklahoma’s defense returned home wishing it made one more stop. On Saturday against Nebraska, they got that final stop — and plenty of others — and it still didn’t matter.

Despite allowing just seven first downs and 180 yards of total offense, the defense couldn’t overcome five Landry Jones interceptions and three missed field goals in a 10-3 loss, dropping the Sooners to 5-4.

"It’s frustrating,” said senior linebacker Ryan Reynolds. "But sometimes we need to come up with a play and we don’t, and sometimes they need to come up with a play and they don’t. Sometimes it doesn’t work out.”

Oklahoma’s defense hasn’t disappointed much this season. Twice, it has kept an opponent under 20 points — and lost.

It forced 11 punts against Nebraska, but never got the game-changing turnover the Huskers did in the second quarter, when they returned one of Jones’ interceptions to the 1-yard line.

"It’d be hard for our defense to play a whole lot better,” said coach Bob Stoops.

Nebraska converted just one of 14 third downs, and the defense made up for its lone hiccup — a 63-yard run by Roy Helu Jr. to the Oklahoma 11 with just under nine minutes to play in the second quarter.

Two plays later, the defense forced its only turnover of the day when junior defensive tackle Gerald McCoy recovered a botched option pitch at the Sooners’ 21.

"You feel you have a good chance to win the game,” Stoops said. "Defensively, we really did play well.”

With a struggling offense, the Sooner defense has been unable to adjust to its much smaller margin of error. Despite allowing just 14, 21, 16 and 10 points in four losses, the defense will return home once again, this time wishing it made a big play.

"We’re going to keep fighting, we’re not going to let anything come between us,” Reynolds said. "We know what’s going to be said, and we’re a family and we’re going to keep fighting. We’ve got three games left.”

Yeah Nebraska's offensive isn't anything special, but rememberthe defense also played really well against Texas and BYU and even Miami. The defense is giving the team a chance to win the games. The offense just continues to run swing passes on 3rd and 9

Right now is it better for this team to win the one stinkin game we need and go play Memphis in the Motor City Bowl or not go bowling at all? I'd say going to a crappy bowl is worse because Bob can hang his hat on it and say, "See, with all the adversity we still made a bowl and won a bowl." He'll then arrogantly thumb his nose at his detractors and life will resume with no changes made. However, no bowl, no matter how painful to the Sooner Nation, SHOULD force Boren's and Castiglione's collective hand to pressure Bob into making changes.

I hate losing as much as the next guy, as evidenced by my many posts, but COME ON, Bob! Give up the crusade to be Snyder loyal to your assistants. Your job is to make this team the best they can be. Know what? They aren't even close.

Congrats to the defense and the coaching staff. This is as good a unit as I have seen at OU since the Roy Williams teams. You guys are definitely keeping OU in all these games but at some point the offense has to do their part. Yes OU has lost only 4 games by a total of 12 points but one could make the argument that OU could also be 0-9 and have lost all nine games by a total of 20 points. Does anyone want that?

really? i mean come on nebraska offense is horrible. i dont think they could have scored playing 11 on none. it was obvious that the only way they could win was with turnovers for touchdowns. and what do we do throw a pick that was returned to the one yard line. i dont want to hear about nebraska's defense it was just pathetic ou offense. we had a ton of chances and couldnt get it done.

My bigest concern is the play calling. I understand that Jones had a bad day, but I don't see any adjustments at half time. You have to work with what you have. It is easy to work with a great offensive line, but when you don't have one, you have to be creative. Seems like we need a change!!!

BV has done a magnificent job this year and should be applauded. If your team can't score enough to beat teams that score 14 points, 21 points, 16 points and 10 points then you don't deserve to win. Thanks for keeping us in games we should have been blown out. Really nice job on the def coor. job this year and using the talent you have.

Get rid of those two or three busts on HUGE runs and the D was very, VERY salty. That being said, this Nebraska team is NOT very good offensively.

Defense was lights out tonight. We somehow, much like the Kansas City Chiefs, managed to lose to a team with a total of SEVEN first downs!!!

Brent V. Your defense is doing a hell of job this year, maybe the best ive seen. Last year everyone hated you and loved Kevin Wilson, but this year your tops. Just ignore all the fickle sooner fans, their not fans at all really just pigs.
