Del City's once-promising season ends with loss to Putnam City North

This wasn't how things were supposed to end for Del City.

The Eagles, loaded with talent on both sides of the ball and with a promising start to the season were supposed to finish with their first playoff berth since 2000.

Instead, Del City's season ended Thursday night in Putnam City Stadium with a 34-7 loss to Putnam North.

The win instead sent the Panthers — and Lawton — into the playoffs while the Eagles stay home.

Thursday night, Del City was done in by turnovers and a lack of consistent punch offensively.

Del City junior quarterback Chazten Gonzalez threw six interceptions as Del City turned the ball over seven times.

What had been Del City's strength this season — its passing game — wound up costing it in the end.

After the game, Eagles players were clearly disappointed as Putnam North celebrated its playoff berth on its home field.

Del City coach Nick Warehime immediately tried to pick his team up, while still acknowledging the disappointment at a season ending unexpectedly.

"I couldn't be more proud of them," Warehime said after addressing his team. "I wish we could've played better and I wish it could've ended differently but that's life."

The Eagles end the season 7-3. But in losing their final two games — last week against Mustang and Thursday against Putnam North — the Eagles finished short of the postseason.

Del City had chances early to get in control but just missed out on several chances.

Gonzalez's throw to junior receiver Marquis Walters in the end zone early in the game wound up just out of Walters' reach. A catch there would've put Del City ahead early in the game.

"We had a couple opportunities to make plays but just didn't quite get it done," Warehime said. "Then we were forced to take some chances in the second half and go away from what we normally do."

Although the Eagles do lose several big pieces of their team — including receivers Chris McAlister and Donavan Dan and several defensive standouts. But Gonzalez will be back, as will Walters and linebacker Quintrell Boykins, among others.

PC North is not a mediocre team. They are a good 6A team, who was placed in a tough division. Don't take anything away from their win. The seventh place team in 6A-1 (Edmond Santa Fe) probably would have been in the playoffs in 6A-2. Districts get shaken up next year. Southmoore will be in a district with Jenks and Broken Arrow.

MCHS is breathing a sigh of relief. PC North is a better match up for the Bombers.

Randall...Understood. And yes i agree. But my point is that if you play a mediocre team in a must win situation and you get blown out 34-7, then you may not belong in the playoffs.

Big, I just find it unusual that a 7 win team doesn't make the playoffs. I'm not from Oklahoma so this is my first experience with OK high school football playoffs and districts

What irks me isn't how 6A-1 shook out, but the fact that a team in 6A-2 without a winning record is going to make the playoffs.

Nine years without a playoff berth. I hope this angers Del City and makes them push harder.

I see all tyhis talk about points, and the head to head, in this case head to head is the first tie breaker unless in a 3 or more way tie. All that goes away when there is not a tie and Lawton got in and not Del City because they have a better district record 5-2 is better then 4-3. The tie breaker was between Del City and PC North who gets the nod based on head to head over Del City.

Randall...You sound a lot like Mack Brown! Quit whining...They dont deserve to go to the playoffs.

O, that's right win your eighth game of the season and then you don't have to worry about not making the playoffs. Top 16 teams should make playoffs regardless of what district it plays in
Randall, Oklahoma City - Nov 6, 2009 at 12:19 pm
DC is my team, but didn't deserve to make it. You can't get beat the last two weeks, and expect to be in the playoffs. Especially when you go in to a game knowing you needed to win otherwise it's in the hand of points, they just didn't take care of business.
Derek, Butler - Nov 6, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Take care of business then you wont have to worry about it. Losing 34-7 in a must win game against a mediocre team does not qualify you as a playoff team in my book anyway.

It didn't even come down to points. Head to head for fourth place and PCN beat Del City. You are a fool.

Kyle you are an idiot. Let's see...three district losses for Del City. They lost to PCNorth, Southmoore and Mustang. Lawton two district losses. You can't get any easier than that. Yes, Del City did beat Lawton, but they got schooled by Mustang and PCNorth who Lawton beat. Duh!

Mike loves the points system because if it was head-to-head (like very other state, Lawton's cheese is left out in the wind.

Of course Mike from Lawton loves the playoff system because if you used a playoff system like other states do, head-to-head is the first tie breaker not this district points junk. For the second year in a row, Del City is screwed out of the playoffs by a f@cked up playoff system.. Congratulations OSSAA, b@stards.

Awesome playoff system. The first three games are when you can shake out the kinks and get in sync. The real season is the last seven games. It has been said all season that a good team in 6A-1 was going to be left out of the playoffs. Del City didn't get it done and they are the odd team out.

It was just like back in 2005 when Midwest City went 7-3 and missed out of the playoffs. The point system is just like the BCS system...it is horrible. Good season Eagles.
Andrew, Midwest City - Nov 6, 2009 at 1:28 am
This is when Oklahoma's playoff system really stinks, Del City at 7-3 out of the playoffs
