Del Piero in low-key A-League debut
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — After much fanfare, Alessandro Del Piero made his debut in Australian football's A-League on the losing side Saturday as his new club, Sydney FC, was beaten 2-0 by the Wellington Phoenix in the league's opening round.
The 37-year-old former Juventus and Italy star played a full 90 minutes on a wet and cool night.
Del Piero started up front but mostly dropped back into midfield where he provided a few classy touches for a team that was substantially outplayed.
He had unthreatening shots on goal in the 13th and 76th minutes. Wellington won with goals from former Belgium international Stein Huysegems in the 42nd minute and young New Zealander Louis Fenton in the 74th.
