In a city where the sport is an integral part of the culture of many students, soccer is the only middle school sport that isn’t allowed to have an all-city tournament. While there aren’t many middle school soccer teams in Oklahoma City, soccer is the sport on the south side.
On good weather days, about 75 to 100 fans watch the games. These aren’t all family members, but community supporters. The kids are really good and the games are incredibly fun to watch. The disappointment that one sees on a south side soccer player’s face when told there isn’t a middle school all-city tournament is depressing. The players understand that this is a cultural thing and see the inherent inequality involved in the decision not to hold a tournament.
OSSAA, the governing body for Oklahoma school sports, doesn’t allow such tournaments. The higher-ups in Oklahoma City athletics have expressed support for a tournament but have done little to advocate for one. We should support the interests of all students in the Oklahoma City district.
