A man accused of stealing money from phones at the Oklahoma County jail was arrested Tuesday after pointing a gun to his head in the parking lot of Penn Square Mall, the sheriff’s department reported.
Oklahoma County sheriff’s investigators had been searching for Thomas Caldwell, 65, since Friday and tracked him to the mall parking lot.
Caldwell is accused of taking $40,000 from telephone terminals inside the Oklahoma County jail. Caldwell worked for Telmate, a telephone company that serves the jail, sheriff’s officials said.
He was seen removing cash from terminals at the jail and leaving via the building’s rear employee entrance, without depositing the money, officials said.
When deputies approached Caldwell on Tuesday, he pulled out a handgun and pointed it at his head, the department reported. Deputies spent five minutes talking to Caldwell before he dropped the gun and was taken into custody.
Investigators are still looking for the cash stolen from the jail.
Caldwell faces six complaints of felony embezzlement, officials said.
