The board, in a special meeting last week, approved the design by MA+ Architecture for an 80,000-square-foot addition to the school.

The addition will include a 20,000-square-foot multi-purpose commons area, a new media center, auditorium, dining area and teachers’ space.

Officials said the design also will beef up the campus’ overall security.

"It’s a beautiful design,” said board President Jeff Johnson.

Community showplace
Superintendent Bonnie Lightfoot said the new addition will be a showplace for the community once it’s complete.

"The building has an outstanding design and the way the architects worked with and sought input from the teachers and staff is going to ensure that it will meet all of our needs now and in the foreseeable future,” she said.

Work on the new campus will begin in early 2010, Johnson said.

The addition will be built in phases and all the work should be complete by January 2012, he added.

The new addition is being built with funds from a $58 million bond issue approved by voters earlier this year.
