Detroit museum to show off early American silver
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Institute of Arts is set to show off its collection of early American silver for the first time in a decade.
The collection features work by Boston silversmith and patriot Paul Revere.
It goes on display beginning Thursday.
The collection was relegated to storage in 2002 when a renovation of the museum led to the closing of the American colonial galleries.
Lack of funding for new exhibition cases forced the silver collection to remain in storage when the museum reopened in 2007. In 2011, the Novi-based Americana Foundation awarded the DIA a grant for new research on the silver collection and to support construction of new exhibition cases to house it.
The new installation includes 59 examples of early American silver and two late-18th century Chinese export bowls.
