DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has named its first Principal Pops Conductor in more than a half-decade.

The orchestra announced Thursday that conductor, composer and arranger Jeff Tyzik will serve in the role for three years beginning with the 2013-14 season. The last person to hold the job was in 2006.

Tyzik is scheduled to appear with the orchestra three times this season and three programs next season in order to familiarize himself with Detroit and its artistic community. That shouldn't be a problem: He says he "immediately fell in love with" the orchestra when he led it for the first time 15 years ago.

Tyzik also holds the same position with several orchestras, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Oregon Symphony and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
