Devon Energy Corp. is joining with five other companies operating in Canada’s oil sands to build a research facility to test water recycling and development techniques.

The $165 million Water Technology Development Center will be built at Suncor Energy’s Firebag facility in northern Alberta. It will be used to test water treatment and recycling technologies.

Devon spokesman Tim Hartley said, “The water technology research center offers benefits of testing without interrupting existing operations. It also will allow for testing of different things simultaneously, versus a ‘get in line’ approach.”

Suncor CEO Steve Williams said the new center will accelerate the pace of innovation, as the companies involved share the risks and costs of developing new technology.

“Water is one of the world’s most precious resources, and there is rising concern about how water is used in almost every industry and every country,” Williams said. “By working together on new technologies, we in the oil sands industry hope to deliver results sooner.

“Our objective is to develop new processes that will allow us to use less water, and we expect that technologies for reducing water usage will also aid in reducing industry costs – this is truly about a triple bottom line approach.”
