Dez Bryant likely to enter NFL Draft

STILLWATER — Watching what has happened to his former pupil makes Lufkin (Texas) High football coach John Outlaw cringe.

Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant, a former Lufkin High star, had his final appeal for reinstatement denied on Thursday after the NCAA last week ruled him ineligible for the remainder of the 2009 season.

Dez Bryant Career at OSU likely over

Multimedia

"I think they (the NCAA) made an example out of Dez,” Outlaw said. "He didn’t kill anybody; he’s not selling dope. There’s a lot of worse things people could do.”

Outlaw said he saw Bryant last weekend and talked, at length, with the Cowboys receiver. Bryant, a potential top-10 pick, told Outlaw he is planning to enter the NFL Draft.

"He’s going to Tampa to get himself ready for the (NFL) combine,” Outlaw said. "He’s the type of kid ... I just don’t think a college degree was going to be a big benefit to him. Had I wished he would have finished it? Yeah.”

Bryant was ruled ineligible on Oct. 7 for lying to NCAA officials about his interaction with Deion Sanders. On Oct. 13, Bryant and OSU officials flew to Indianapolis to meet with NCAA officials to request reinstatement this season, but the NCAA denied that request on Oct. 27. OSU immediately appealed the decision to the NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement committee, and that appeal was denied on Thursday.

That decision, coupled with Bryant’s likely departure to the NFL, could mean the end of a superb collegiate career. He had 147 catches for 2,425 yards and 29 touchdowns at Oklahoma State.

"He’s not bitter at anybody,” said Outlaw, who called Bryant the best player he’s coached in his 33-year career. "He admitted he made a mistake, he told the NCAA after he made the mistake. He doesn’t have a guilty conscience, he hasn’t done anything wrong.

"I don’t know what it’s like to be 20 years old and have that many people after you, I can’t relate to it. I’m 57 years old, and if Deion called and invited me, I’d probably go.”

The long-time coach tears up when he thinks how much Bryant overcame to become an All-American at OSU.

"If you knew what that child has gone through, you’d have tears in your eyes like I do when I think about it,” Outlaw said. "I could write a book about what he had to go through.”

Bryant made a mistake by lying to NCAA officials, and while Outlaw understands Bryant should pay for that mistake, it hurts him to see his former player have his final season at OSU taken away from him.

"Football is everything to Dez,” Outlaw said. "He has a passion for the game and he’ll prove that when he gets his chance. He’s a fine young man. He’s had his problems, but who hasn’t?”

ESPN reported late Thursday night that Bryant will enter the NFL Draft.

“I feel this is the best decision for me,” Bryant told ESPN. “It's what God wants me to do. I'm going to start my training Tuesday in Tampa.”

Dare I say it? Maybe...the "lie" was just one part of the equation, here. But, who's gonna talk? Dez sure isn't going to implicate himself and no one at OSU is going to spill the beans, at least in the near future. It benefits no one at OSU to tell the NCAA anything. Refer to USC and the Reggie Bush deal on that one!

We'll never know the whole story? Oh come on, the truth always outs when there's a book deal in the works. If there's more to it then Dez was the sacrificial lamb and he saved the OSU program (is my guess). But we're all just guessing here, aren't we? Or is there a man-in-the-know amongst us?

Uh, to be quite honest, Pat Jones says, uh, there's almost certainly more to this than being dishonest with the NCAA. And, uh, by and large, he's watched this situation with his own two eyes and, uh, he says people outside the OSU program will never know the whole story.

Dustin, amazing that you can assume that Dez is a pathological liar based on his NCAA lie.

You must be a great judge of character based on that. By the way, those same scouts you keep talking about have Bradford out of the top 10 and Dez in it. Just an FYI.

And Todd, you shouldn't really give anyone crap about where they went to college. You went to goat humping class and flunked out.
Jacob, Kansas - Nov 6, 2009 at 1:36 pm
dustin, find one current mock draft that has glass shoulder Sammy going ahead of either of those two. I guess every single mock draft out there is wrong. You are a moron. Mock drafts may not be exactly correct as to when they go or where they are going but the ones done by the experts are the best thing out there for an indication to where a player will go.

One thing is for sure, though - in a couple of years we will be seeing all 3 of them on TV.

Dez making highlight reel plays in the NFL.

Okung anchoring a line in the NFL.

And overrated glass shoulder Sammy standing next to Jason White selling heating and air conditioning units.

But Bradford has character.

LOL @ dustin

What an idiot.
Shannon, Moore - Nov 6, 2009 at 12:42 pm
Toad, to answer your question, OSU. Graduated with electrical engineering degree and yes you are still dumb.

dustin, Shannon is right. Bradford will go later than you think in the draft.
Jason, Tulsa - Nov 6, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Shannon, mock draft boards don't mean squat. We'll know more about that at the combine. If Okung and Bryant fail to impress, I'm right. You're an idiot for putting so much stock in mock drafts. Didn't EVERY mock draft (even the night before) have Reggie Bush going to Houston. I guess you and your mock draft expertise saw the draft of Mario Williams and his eventual development, didn't you?

The fact is each team will understand more what they need at the season's end. If the teams who draft first don't need a QB, Bradford goes later. For example, Detroit won't draft Bradford. Same thing with WR.

We don't know until the draft because of possible trades and such. All I'm saying is Bryant's character will be questioned and he has to know how to respond positively.

Once again, Shannon mock drafts don't mean anything. The real draft does. I bet you feel that success in a fantasy league predicates football knowledge.

I've been a fan of this sport since I was a boy and I don't pay attention to mock drafts.

LET ME REPEAT, NO ONE KNOWS WHO IS DRAFTED WHEN UNTIL THE DRAFT. It can't be more plain than that.

The comments about Bradford wowwing scouts comes from the scouts themselves. They have admitted that they have enough information on
Bradford. But he still has to impress at the combine.

All I can say is watch out Mel Kiper, Jr. becuase Dustin is coming for your job!...you tard

Face it, nobody wants overrated Sammy Bradford with his glass shoulder.

His character should serve him well making commercials for heating and air conditioning devices with overrated Jason White.

Punch a player after a game (assault) = 1/2 season suspension
Gouge a players eyes (assault) = 1 game self-imposed suspension
School buys your mother a house and pays you to play = No suspension
Tell a lie = End of college career???

Whats wrong with this picture?

I hope Bradford got his shoulder surgery from the same surgeon who performed Favre's miracle come-back. Favre now is almost better than he ever was! They must have put some Superman glue in there with Favre. If Bradford got a fix like that -watch out!

Let's not forget, Bradford has character. He is articulate. He'll do well on the wonderlic.

Pro teams do factor in character when making a draft, thank Pac-Man for the renewed emphasis.

What happens at the combine when scouts press Bryant on the suspension? Will he be honest? Scouts will know the truth because the NFL is investigating Deion and the open records/freedom of information acts. Catch Dez in more lies and he'll be lucky to be in the top 15.
dustin, edmond - Nov 6, 2009 at 10:37 am
Shannon, Moore, you are an idiot. Okung won't go before Bradford either.

You must be one of those idiot scouts that also has Colt McCoy ahead of Bradford. Make no mistake, Bradford has zip and accuracy. The shoulder injury is not unique among quarterbacks. Scouts have enough information about Bradford. He can read defenses, make check downs, and deliver the ball accurately. He doesn't have the strongest arm but the pros outweigh the cons. Bradford has shown time and again, he can play. Get off OSU homer status.
dustin, edmond - Nov 6, 2009 at 10:33 am
Lighten up Gary, It is probably going to get worse for the pukes. After a narrow win agianst Baylor, MOO U will go O fer. Dez would have a better shot in the Arena league or at the Stoolwater feed lot.

It is a shame that being investigated for a non violation stands between a 20 year old student and his college degree. Is that really what the NCAA wants? True, it was likely that Dez was going to the NFL this next year and a college degree in the next few years were not in his plans. But what about the next kid that isn't a pro prospect this early in his college career?

OSU knew about Dez and Deion during the summer at the Pickens University Alumnus cook-out. Mike Gundy expressed concern over the dealings. That was well observed. OSU did nothing but "express concern."

Secondly, you've got to love how OSU lised Dez as "injured" for the Grambling game. Then they say,"No, he was really 'suspended'." OSU really wanted him back for the Texas game...too bad he wouldn't have made a difference.
dustin, edmond - Nov 6, 2009 at 9:28 am
Good way to start your career, broke with no degree. I say this because his relocation and training is no doubt being paid for by an angent. He better be smart with his guaranteed money or he'll be like the 60-75% of pro football players 3-4 years after they retire--broke. Supposedly he had a over a 3.0 GPA at OSU; either OSU is terribly easy or they cut him tremendous slack on his way to a degree in "recreation studies" or "sports science."

He's not the only one: several "smart" (3+ GPA) athletes, all of whom ESPN absolutely adores, are completely inarticulate and redundant when interviewed. On the other hand, Bradford is sharp.

All of you OSU homers, Dez lied again: During his interview in Texas he said he'd practice with the team and attend class as usual (Gotta maintain the 3.5). At the time he wasn't with the team (Sam Mayes says that Tuesdays are pretty important during the CFB season). Now he's quitting school and officially ditching his teammates.

NCAA didn't suspend him for "lying" as many of you claim,"...Alabama player lied about real violations and only suspended six weeks; in contrast, Dez lied about nonviolation and gets suspended for one calendar year." IN CASE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS, Dez wasn't martyred. The "lying to the NCAA" example has been set. There was precedent. There is much more to this case and dialogue released from the open records request will substantiate this.

The fact is Dez repititiously lied not only to the NCAA, but also to the OSU compliance office and coaches, and even lied to his attorneys representing him in his dealing with the NCAA.

If there isn't more to this case, then the NCAA is just flat wrong (with the more appropriate suspension being 3 games).
dustin, edmond - Nov 6, 2009 at 9:22 am
Bill Clinton lied, so did George Bush. Reggie Bush and his family illegally received hundreds of thousands of dollars violating not only NCAA bylaws but IRS laws as well and NOTHING was done. Pete Carroll illegally recruited Jimmy Clauson NOTHING done. The two kids from Alabama accepted illegal gifts from a booster.. NOTHING done. Nebraska NEVER on NCAA probation? New Mexico's coach commits a felony assault and a one game suspension? Sure, Dez was wrong and should have been punished but without uniformity, the NCAA is like everything else powerful in this country... corrupt to the core!

My point was that the punishment should fit the crime. You don't give the death penalty for perjury. There needs to be a set penalty for each NCAA violation where they don't hand out 1 game to one player and a year for someone else. The irony of the lies is that it was about a non violation that should not have been investigated in the first place.

At least he'll be fairly represented in the NFL and punishment is dealt out squarely and openly instead of picking and choosing like they do in college football. This whole incident makes me dislike the college game of football. I'm going back nd watching more high school ball - oh wait, Jenks and Booker T. are caught in big scandals. OK, Little League - no their season is over, guess it's just the pros from now on. Good luck Dez. You took the high road and didn't strike back against your oppressors. Joe, at the risk of staing the blatantly obvious (to everyone else, but certainly not to you), NO OSU alum or fan is condoning Bryant's lying. He SHOULD have been disciplined for that action. However, the argument is being made that discipline should be proportionate to the act for which it is being applied. If your 11th grade kid lies to you three times about going over to a friend's house when you were "just wondering" where they were, does that mean that you are going to ground them for the rest of their junior year? YOU might, however I believe an educated parent would be able to apply a sensible commensurate punishment for the action. Bryant lied about a NON-violation while an SEC player lied about a TRUE violation and the SEC player got a 6 game suspension. Are you seriously going to try to argue that the NCAA applies its decisions in such matters in a consistent and equitable manner? If there is more to the story than Bryant just having dinner at Sanders house, then fine, apply whatever discipline is appropriate. But the NCAA has not stated anything more than Bryant having lied as a rationale for their decision. If the criminal justice system applied its sentencing measures in the same arbitrary fashion (and I'm not saying they don't), there would be all kinds of law suits (and Lord knows, there are). Again, no one is complaining about OSU being picked on, the complaint is about how inconsistent and arbitrary (SEC issue), and just plain blind (Reggie Bush issue) the NCAA is when dealing with student athletes.

Listen up lOSUrs. I told you Dez would be gone for the year when this story first broke. You didn't believe me. I told you Texass would not only win over OSUcks but that it would be an azz kicking. You still were dilusional and thought you would win. You didn't even come close. So, hear me now and believe me latter.....Dez is screwing up again! The NFL looks at your character as much as they look at skill. By leaving school he is making a major mistake. If this guy were smart (which we know he isn't since he went to OSUcks and lied to the NCAA) he would stay in school and support his teammates. However, he is once again going on his own (as he did after Gumby told him to stay away from Deion) and shunning his team. What a moron!

Wah wah wah. Poor picked-on OSU. The NCAA is just there to get those hated Sooners, it shouldn't be enforcing the same rules against OSU! It is sad that the NCAA does stuff like this to kids. It is an organization that is way out of control. I guy who tries to put someone's eyes out in a game gets a 1 game suspension and a guy who is scared in an interview doesn't say everything in an interview is suspended for a year. The only thing they are going to accomplish is speed up kids leaving for the pros. And I am an OU guy, the same situation happened this year for Mike Balogun.
