STORRS, Conn. (AP) — UConn coach Bob Diaco named his staff Monday, surrounding himself with coaches he has worked with in the past.
The 40-year-old former Notre Dame defensive coordinator, hired last month to his first head coaching job, has previous professional ties to eight of the nine coaches on his staff at UConn.
When asked last month how he would decide on a staff, he hinted that those types of ties were important to him.
"I have a collection of people in my life that are really good people that are loyal and trustworthy," he said.
Former Western Illinois coach Don Patterson was named associate head coach, and will also coach the quarterbacks.
Patterson coached at Iowa when Diaco played there and hired Diaco as a running backs and special teams coach at Western Illinois in 1999. That was Diaco's first full-time coaching job.
Patterson led Western Illinois to a 62-45 record from 1999-2009 before stepping away to battle cancer. He has been at Buffalo as quarterbacks coach for the past three seasons.
Mike Cummings takes over as offensive coordinator, after four years in that position at Central Michigan. Cummings and Diaco were on the same coaching staff together at Eastern Michigan in 2000 and 2001.
Diaco also was on a staff at the University of Virginia with three of his staff members.
Anthony Poindexter and former New England Patriot Vincent Brown are listed as defensive coordinator and co-defensive coordinator.
