As of 2012, Oklahoma had 279 full-time teachers in classrooms through the Troops to Teachers program. At least 13,000 teachers were in the program nationwide.

The state Education Department funds the program through grants from the U.S. Defense Department.

About $15 million is allocated from the Pensacola, Fla., Troops to Teachers home office each year to be given out in $5,000 stipends and $10,000 bonuses for veterans in the program.

The program recruits veterans who have at least a bachelor's degree.
