Dior Smiley, Chris Compton lead Douglass over Glenpool

BY LARRY LEWIS For The Oklahoman Published: October 28, 2011

— When Glenpool had Douglass on the ropes, it was time to call on Dior Smiley and Chris Compton.

Smiley and Compton combined for all five touchdowns to lead Douglass to a 33-30 victory over host Glenpool on Friday night in the District 4A-2 game.

Douglass (7-2, 5-1) ran 64 plays on offense to just 26 for Glenpool (5-4, 5-1), but Glenpool's big plays kept the Warriors in the game. Glenpool 286 of its 296 total, yards on just five plays.

“When you face good football teams, they are going to make plays,” said Douglass coach Willis Alexander. “My hat's off to them.”

The Trojans trailed 21-20 late in the third quarter until a drive, highlighted by a two clutch third-down catches by Smiley from Compton, put Douglass up 26-21 with 1:31 left in the third quarter.

A spectacular 40-yard touchdown run by Smiley seemed to put the game away at 33-21 midway through the fourth quarter until a frantic comeback attempt ended as time expired.

“I just felt like we answered every challenge,” said Alexander. “We showed a lot of character tonight the way we could withstand everything that was thrown at us. We were fortunate to hold on to win.”
